Sports tourism has been around for almost 50 years now as people have been travelling to popular retreats in the Costa Del Sol in Spain and the Algarve in Portugal on golfing holidays. Africa is emerging as a new player in the game and is now rivalling some of the more established sporting resorts in the world. Golfing holidays are not just a big thing in Europe and the United States as South Africa now has some of the best, most respected courses on the PGA Golf tour. Many of the golf courses throughout Southern Africa are member only courses but their standard rivals that of anywhere else in the world.
Although Africa is noted for its popular Botswana safaris amongst many others the continent has not only taken to mainstream sport tourism but it?s also embraced extreme tourism. Destinations all over Africa are popping up every year claiming to offer a new and unique activity in the bid to get an influx of tourists. South Africa, Zambia and Namibia are all nations that have taken the concept of extreme sports and developed some of the best and most unique experiences for tourists. Whilst most people spend time in the Ruaha National Park whilst in Africa, many others spend there time in more unknown locations experiencing some of Africa?s real high?s.
Home to the highest commercial bungee jump in the world, South Africa has a lot to offer the extreme sports tourist. It?s located right in the middle of the popular Garden route, along South Africa?s southern coast and has really stimulated much more travel in the region since it?s opening. A trip to South Africa or Namibia could be the extension of a Tanzania safari on the continent, whilst spending a week on a game drive in East Africa why not spend the other half of your holiday skydiving or sand boarding down the dunes in Africa?s oldest desert, the Namib Desert. Africa is home to all your sporting needs and although some of the resorts may not be as developed as some of the more established destinations in Europe and America they certainly have a bright future ahead of them if they are marketed and advertised in the correct way.
