What do Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry and Joe Jonas have in common? Well, aside from being internationally renowned pop stars, all three are involved in a new campaign Pepsi has just launched. "Live for Now" focuses on the motto "carpe diem" and celebrates spontaneity through events, digital marketing and, of course, musical partnerships.

For Jonas, the opportunity to spread that message fits with his own philosophy about living life to the fullest. "It's, I think, a good match. A lot of stuff that I love to do is spontaneous, last minute and living in the moment," he explained to MTV News. "And what better way to encourage people and my fans to be able to live in the moment? 'Live for Now' is tweeting about it and getting them involved."

As for being the face of the campaign alongside Perry and Minaj (whose Pepsi ads already debuted), well, for Joe, that was icing on the cake. "I'm in great company: Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, more people to come, it's an incredible little circle right now," he explained.

"So, hopefully, we'll all be able to do something together one day. But, as for now, just being able to do it individually and encourage their fans, my fans to get out there, or whomever, and be able to send in their little videos or pictures of them doing things that are in the moment."

And, he added, those moments can be big or small. "I love being able to travel, take trips," he said. "I called my buddies up. I literally called one of my best friends [brother-in-law Mikey Deleasa], he showed up to my house in New York, and I'm like, 'Hey, what are you doing tomorrow? Let's go to Vegas. Let's do it!' We had an incredible trip. We went to the Mayweather fight, and living in the moment and having a good time.

"But, if you can't take Vegas trips on the weekend, there's amazing things to do probably in your area," he added. "Or, a road trip with your friends is always great."

Earlier this month, Pepsi announced that Michael Jackson, who struck a deal with the brand in 1984, will be featured on Pepsi cans as a part of the campaign. The cans arrive Stateside later this month.

Artificial Space Shuttle Explorer readies for launch at sea, journey to Houston

Artificial Space Shuttle Explorer readies for launch at sea, journey to Houston

Were you asleep at mission control during Endeavor's final flight? Did you forget to look to the New York City skyline for the Enterprise's last adventure? Buck up buttercup, there's still one Space Shuttle launch you haven't missed -- a faux Space Shuttle, named Explorer, is prepping itself to ride a barge to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. The full-size shuttle mockup was shuffled out of the Kennedy Space Center Complex to make way for an actual spacecraft last year, and will now embark on a ten day journey by sea to its new home in Texas. "NASA's Space Shuttle changed the way we think about space, making it more accessible, understandable and useful," stated Space Center Houston President, Richard Allen. "It is our intent to continue that legacy with this exciting new attraction." The replica shuttle will be getting a few upgrades, including a new cockpit that more closely resembles the interior of space shuttle Atlantis, and will be housed in a new education facility that is being built around the mock spacecraft. Sure, it's not as exciting as a legitimate shuttle launch, but we're still happy to give the old bird one final send off.

NDS' Surfaces turns your wall into a TV, or a TV into a wall... one of those two

Image

Remember the wall that was also a television in Total Recall? That's the inspiration behind Surfaces -- a concept device produced by British cable mavens NDS. Abandoning the idea of a single screen, the company mounted six displays into a wall that offers up TV and internet content when on, and blends into your wallpaper when off. The setup will even control your room's lighting for those particularly emotive X Factor performances and you control the whole thing with your iPad (while tweeting, bitchily about the show). However, before you storm the company's Staines headquarters looking to buy one, there are a few obstacles you should know about. Firstly, this amazing setup cost over $30,000 and secondly, it only really works if you've got plenty of content filmed in 4K -- but don't worry, Peter Jackson's working on it.

House panel considers higher 2013 defense budget

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House Armed Services Committee pressed ahead Wednesday with a version of the 2013 defense budget that adds billions to President Barack Obama's proposed budget and rejects the administration's call for military base closings.

The committee convened to go through details of a spending blueprint that calls for a base defense budget of $554 billion, including nuclear weapons spending, plus $88 billion for the war in Afghanistan and related counterterrorism efforts.

That compares with the administration's proposed figures of $551 billion plus $88 billion.

Rep. Buck McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the committee, said the legislation represents a "modest" increase over the administration's proposed budget. "This mark actively rebuilds the military within the constrained resources available to us," McKeon said.

The committee's ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, said in an opening statement that he is pleased the bill includes new conditions on providing aid to Pakistan.

"It is imperative that Pakistan support our counterterrorism efforts," he said.

The committee voted to prohibit the Pentagon from planning for a new round of military base closings in 2013. Panetta had proposed two rounds, despite no election-year enthusiasm for it in Congress.

Election-year maneuvering over the size of the Pentagon budget is unfolding against a backdrop of worries by Republicans and Democrats alike that the nation's defenses will suffer if lawmakers cannot stave off more than $500 billion in mandatory military spending cuts scheduled to begin taking effect next year.

The military service chiefs, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, have said publicly they support the Obama plan, but some Republicans have suggested the chiefs harbor secret misgivings.

The administration already is selectively cutting $487 billion from the Pentagon budget over 10 years, an approach it calls prudent in light of shrinking combat commitments abroad and concerns about budget deficits at home.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has stressed his concern about Congress failing to find a way around the $500 billion in mandatory automatic cuts to the defense budget over 10 years, starting in January, which he said would require a "meat-ax approach" to savings.

"We are convinced that it would result in hollowing-out the force and inflicting severe damage to our national defense," Panetta told the Senate Armed Services Committee in February.

The House bill challenges the administration's proposal on several important fronts, including a provision that would block planned increases in health care fees for certain military retirees. The administration argues that such increases are overdue and that the savings are needed to preserve spending in other areas.

The bill also would prohibit the Air Force from retiring certain Air National Guard planes, as called for in the administration's plan. Numerous state governors have pushed back hard against the administration's proposed aircraft cuts and reassignments.
