Researchers Find More Than 200 Genes Linked to Crohn's Disease
British scientists have identified more than 200 gene locations associated with Crohn's disease, an incurable digestive disorder. Their research utilized the entire human genome, the complete set of human genetic information stored in DNA.
The total is larger than the number of genes located for any other disease, according to ScienceDaily. For example, there are 66 known locations for type 2 diabetes.
The researchers, from University College London (UCL), believe that their findings will eventually lead to more personalized Crohn's treatment. The disorder is one of the two principal types of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The other is ulcerative colitis. The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America states that Crohn's affects up to 700,000 Americans. It typically strikes between 15 and 35, but can occur at any age.
The exact cause of the disorder has eluded researchers for decades. Most experts believe that several factors play important roles in the development of the disease. Those cited most often are genetics, environmental factors, and an abnormal immune reaction to benign substances like bacteria in the intestines. Crohn's is a chronic illness that can involve any part of the digestive tract from mouth to anus, according to PubMed Health.
Scientists have believed for years that understanding the genetic component of such a complex disease is critical to explaining symptoms and developing better methods of treatment. However, they have remained stymied over detailed genetic mapping for the disorder because of the large number of genes involved, complex interactions with the environment, and a wide range of symptoms.
The British team utilized data from a consortium with information on nearly 1,700 Crohn's patients. Data provided by the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases on 813 patients led to replication of results of the British study.
Results from the UCL study appeared in the American Journal of Human Genetics. One of the factors the team believes was responsible for their success was use of highly detailed maps of the human genome. Another was their ability to subdivide Crohn's patients by the way they presented with the disorder. The results also represent the first definite signs that certain patient sub-groups are predisposed to carry different risk genes.
Like most patients who have had this illness for decades, I often become impatient when I read about a discovery linked to the genetics of Crohn's disease. Since about 20 percent of patients have a close family member with IBD, years ago, I asked whether I should have my daughter tested.
The doctor and I agreed that it was pointless. Her symptoms were either due to Crohn's or not. Time would tell. From a patient's perspective, what is strikingly different about the identification of more than 200 genes is the hope that it will lead to more personalized treatment, not just more data on a library shelf.

After the Ashura bombing last year in Kabul, the suicide attack last Friday in northern Faryab was the deadliest attack in the country and has caused an outpouring of condemnations from both the national and international community.
The Faryab blast, leaving nearly 90 dead and wounded, took place inside a mosque where the worshippers had gathered to attend the Eid Prayer on Friday.
Following the tragic event, President Karzai visited bomb-hit Maimana to express sympathies to the survivors of Friday?s victims.
President Karzai said the incident occurred just after the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia announced suicide attack was forbidden in Islam. President Karzai linked Faryab attack to the enemies of Islam and Afghanistan.
Condemning the Eid blast in Faryab, the head of a cultural foundation and civil society organization, Meer Ahmad Joinda insisted the Afghan government must prevent the reoccurrence of such incidents by clarifying its strategy of war against the insurgents and continuing to make strong efforts to conduct peace talks with the armed oppositions.
In reaction to the Faryab attack, ISAF has strongly condemned the incident. ?This tragic incident once again shows disrespect towards all Afghans and especially Eid celebrants?including innocent civilians.? The insurgents are showing that they do not want peace or stability. I once again express my deep condolences to the families and friends of those killed and wounded in the attack,? ISAF spokesman G?nter Katz said.
The Foreign Relations Advisor of the Afghan High Peace Council, Muhammad Ismail Qasimyar, said the attack was practiced by aliens.
According to Qasimyar, the issues of peace negotiations with the Talban and stability in Afghanistan were so complicated and the issue was rooted in regional and trans-regional countries.
Qasimyar noted mostly civilians are targeted in the country because of Pakistani military?s continued support of violence in Afghanistan.

Bettman says full NHL season unrealistic
NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman still hasn't heard what he wants from the players' association, so he won't return to the bargaining table and he won't play a full hockey season.
With only one day remaining before the league's self-imposed deadline to reach a deal that would ensure an 82-game season, Bettman revealed Wednesday that he has given up hope of a complete slate of games.
"Unfortunately, it looks like an 82-game season is not going to be a reality," he said.
Speaking at a news conference Wednesday announcing the New York Islanders' move from Nassau Coliseum to Brooklyn's Barclays Center in 2015, Bettman seemed resigned to a shortened season with the NHL and the players' association still at odds after months of negotiations.
Instead of a celebration, a pall was cast over the event as the lockout approached its 40th day. The NHL is close to another announcement that games will be wiped off the schedule for good.
Bettman stated, in making the NHL's most recent offer, that a deal needed to be in place by Thursday for the season to begin Nov. 2 and be played in full. No negotiations are scheduled this week or anytime soon.
"The fact of the matter is there are just sometimes that you need to take time off because it's clear that you can't do anything to move the process forward," Bettman said. "We're at one of those points right now because we gave our very best offer. That offer, for better or for worse, was contingent on playing an 82-game season. So I think things actually in some respects may get more difficult."
The players' association reached out to the NHL on Tuesday night in an attempt to set up a face-to-face bargaining session Wednesday, but the league declined. The NHL's position is if the union isn't willing to talk about the league's offer that is on the table and isn't prepared to make a new proposal of its own working off that offer, there is no reason to talk.
"There seems to be no interest in making any sort of deal along the lines of what we have expressed a desire and a need for," Bettman said. "Sometimes in collective bargaining you have to take a deep breath before you can move forward."
The union wants anything and everything open for discussion. Bettman wouldn't agree to those terms, so the hockey season remains in peril.
"The players made multiple core-economic proposals on Thursday that were a significant move in the owners direction," union executive director Donald Fehr said in a statement on Wednesday night. "We are and continue to be ready to meet to discuss how to resolve our remaining differences, with no preconditions. For whatever reason, the owners are not. At the same time they are refusing to meet, they are winding the clock down to yet another artificial deadline they created."
A partial season is still a possibility, and the NHL hasn't called off any marquee events such as the outdoor Winter Classic on New Year's Day or the All-Star game.
That could change in a hurry.
"I'm not going to give you an exact timetable, but at some point in November we will have to commit many millions of dollars to get ready for the Winter Classic. So if there's still uncertainty, we're going to have to make a decision," Bettman said. "My guess is we're not going to commit those dollars unless we have certainty."
At some point a deal will have to be made to get the players back on the ice. The NHL canceled the entire 2004-05 season because of a lockout that led to the league adopting a salary cap system for the first time.
A shortened season is still the most likely scenario once the sides can get back to talking and working their way to an agreement.
"Sure, you can play an abbreviated season. I would rather play a full season, and I am sure our fans would rather we play a full season," Bettman said. "That's why we made the offer we did. That was our fourth offer against really one offer from the union in all the time that we've been negotiating from the summer. We very much want to play and we're very disappointed that we're not."
Following a conference call held by the union's executive board on Tuesday night, the players' association informed the NHL it was willing to meet on Wednesday "or any other date, without preconditions, to try to reach an agreement," the union said in a statement.
The NHL's response wasn't what the players' association had hoped to hear.
"We said to them that we are prepared to meet if you want to discuss our offer or you want to make a new offer," Bettman said. "They have no inclination in doing either, and so there really was no point in meeting at this point."
The sides haven't met since the league turned down three counterproposals from the union last Thursday, two days after the NHL's offer that included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue.
There is a major divide between the sides over how to deal with existing player contracts. The union wants to ensure that those are all paid in full without affecting future player contracts.
Bettman refused to say whether the 50-50 split in the NHL's most recent offer would come off the table if a full season isn't played.
"I'm not going to negotiate publicly," he said.
This is the third lockout of Bettman's tenure. The stoppage began Sept. 16.

There are now more than five million individual barcodes in use around the world, according to regulator GS1 UK.
Sunday, 7 October is the 60th anniversary of the barcode patent, filed in the US in 1952.
However the distinctive black-and-white stripes did not make their first appearance in an American shop until 1974 - because the laser technology used to read them did not exist.
GS1 said the QR code was not a threat to the traditional linear barcode.
A QR (Quick Response) code is an image made up of dots, which can contain more data than a barcode.
"They have different purposes - the barcode on the side of a tin of beans is for point-of-sale scanning. It ensures the consumer is charged the right amount and updates stock records," said Gary Lynch, chief executive of GS1 UK.
"The QR code's main purpose is to take the person that scans it to an extended multi media environment. Technically you can combine the two but nobody's asking for that right now."
The first item to be scanned by a barcode was a packet of chewing gum in an Ohio supermarket in 1974.
But the black-and-white stripes did not get a universal welcome, with some wine manufacturers refusing to incorporate barcodes onto their labels for aesthetic reasons.
Now it occasionally doubles as body art, with US singer Pink among those who sport a barcode tattoo.
"Barcodes are an icon and rightly so - we're quite pleased about it," said Mr Lynch.
"But if one of my daughters had one in homage to her father I'd be rather upset."

Ark. GOP calls candidates' statements 'offensive'
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas Republicans are speaking out against "offensive" statements by a GOP state representative who is running for re-election and a former GOP legislator running for a state House seat.
The state GOP chairman, the Arkansas Republican House Caucus and U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin issued statements Saturday criticizing books written by Rep. Jon Hubbard of Jonesboro and former legislator Charlie Fuqua, who is running for a Batesville-area seat.
Hubbard self-published a book in 2009, in which he wrote slaves were better off in America than they were in Central Africa.
Fuqua's 2012 book says there is "no solution to the Muslim problem short of expelling all followers of the religion from the United States."
Griffin contributed $100 to the candidates and says he wants that money donated to charity.

Chicago students returning to class as teachers strike ends
CHICAGO (AP) ? Students prepared to return to class Wednesday after Chicago teachers voted to suspend their first strike in a quarter century, shutting 350,000 children out of school, disrupting the daily routines of thousands of families and making the city's schoolyards a flashpoint for union rights and public school reforms across the country.
Union delegates voted overwhelmingly Tuesday night to suspend the walkout after discussing a proposed contract settlement with the nation's third largest school district. They said the contract wasn't perfect but included enough concessions ? including on new teacher evaluations, recall rights for laid-off teachers and classroom conditions ? to go back to work while they prepare to put it to a vote by more than 26,000 teachers and support staff in coming weeks.
"I miss the kids," said Symantha Lancaster, a delegate who works in career services, based at an elementary school. "I know we're fighting for a cause (but) I want to go back."
Parents say they are relieved the strike was over and are looking forward to finding teachers behind desks instead of on the picket lines outside schools. It meant the end of hassles trying to find alternative activities for their children, or dropping them at one of more than 140 schools the district kept open for several hours a day so they could be safe and eat breakfast and lunch.
"I am elated. I couldn't be happier," said Erica Weiss, who had to leave work in the middle of the day to pick up her 6-year-old daughter. "I have no one else to watch her. ... I can't even imagine the people who could have possibly even lost their jobs over having to stay home with their kids because they have no alternate care. It just put everyone in a pickle."
Wilonda Cannon, a single mother raising her four children in North Lawndale, a West Side neighborhood beset by gang shootings and poverty, said she was relieved that her two youngest kids would be returning to class after spending the last seven school days with their grandfather.
She said she hoped the agreement was the beginning of something new for Chicago's public school system, which has long struggled with high drop-out rates and low test scores. It will take months if not years before parents and teachers will see whether the changes and contract provisions pay off for students.
"I don't know all the ins and outs (of the contract negotiations) ... but it does seem as though it's a step in the right direction," Cannon said.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel ? who filed a lawsuit this week to try to force teachers back to work ? called the settlement "an honest compromise."
Union leaders pointed to concessions by the city on how closely teacher evaluations will be tied to student test scores and to better opportunities for teachers to retain their jobs if schools are closed by budget cuts.
"We said that we couldn't solve all the problems of the world with one contract, and it was time to end the strike," said Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis.
With an average salary of $76,000, Chicago teachers are already among the highest-paid in the nation. The district's final proposal included an average 7 percent raise over three years, with additional raises for experience and education.
But the evaluations and job security measures stirred the most intense debate. The union said the evaluation system relied too heavily on test scores and did not take into account outside factors that affect student performance such as poverty, violence and homelessness.
The union also pushed to give laid-off teachers first dibs on open jobs anywhere in the district. The district said that could prevent principals from hiring the teachers they thought most appropriate for the position. The tentative settlement proposed giving laid-off teachers first shot at schools that absorbed their former students and filling half of district openings from a pool of laid-off teachers.
Susan Hickey, a school social worker, said she is eager to learn how the students she counsels fared over the summer.
"How are they? Are they OK?" she said. "I'm glad to be back for all kinds of reasons."

Like my Pu-erh and Rooibos but used to stick my nose up at the mention of green tea. Not anymore. Came home from town on a recent muggy day, in need of a pick me up. Spotted a parcel from Barry?s Tea?and inside were three packs of green tea!
Not used to Green Tea? The leaflet asked. ?Then try our Green Tea and Lemon.? Not expecting much, but I tried it. Well, well, well. It certainly is refreshing, a pleasure for the nose and the palate and it must be all those antioxidants that gave me the boost.
I sure was willing to experiment after that and, the next day, tried their Natural Green Tea. No lemon here but the zest remains, the antioxidants are still at work. It is not unlike the black teas but not as robust, being more delicate with a subtle flavour. Liked that too.
I next moved on to the Organic Green Tea ? all three are part of Barry?s Well Being series. This too is ?brimming with antioxidants? and I didn't find the taste much different from the previous tea. There are some minor differences in the standing time when making these teas. Keep an eye on those and you?ll have the perfect green cuppa. And please, I?ll have one also!

Philippines Reacts to Chinese Military Deployment

Philippine President Benigno Aquino says his country will not back down in a territorial dispute with China.
Mr. Aquino made the statement Monday in his annual state of the union address, reacting to China's establishment on Sunday of Sansha city across several disputed islands of the South China Sea. China refers to the islands as Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha.
Beijing's planned deployment of a military garrison to Sansha brought a swift response from President Aquino.

Wiggins and his teammates were at the font of the pack as it arrived on the streets of Paris for eight laps of a 6.5-kilometer circuit on the Champs-Elysees.
Veteran rider George Hincapie, competing in his 17th consecutive and final?Tour, led the peloton onto the prestigious avenue alongside fellow American Chris Horner.
With Sky determined to help Cavendish secure a fourth consecutive win in Paris, Horner and Hincapie were immediately reined in. Several other riders tried to break away but the peloton was not ready to give them any slack as the race passed some of the capital's most iconic monuments such as the Louvre museum, the Eiffel tower and the Place?de?la Concorde.
Six riders including Jens Voigt of Germany finally escaped from the back with 30 kilometers to go. They had a maximum lead of 30 seconds but were progressively reeled in as Liquigas and Sky organized the chase.

GOP senators won't say if Obama plan is amnesty
WASHINGTON (AP) ? When it comes to President Barack Obama's new immigration policy, Senate Republicans are quite sure they don't like it. They just don't want to say if it amounts to amnesty, at least not yet, while they await guidance on the politically charged issue from presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
"If it leads to citizenship as a reward for some kind of illegal entry, I think it could be argued" to be amnesty, said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, who normally is one of Obama's most plainspoken critics.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Georgia said the president's announcement last Friday could be called "amnesty light," if not the real thing.
"It all depends on how you define 'amnesty,' and I'm not going to get into that debate," added Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl, second-ranking party leader and another frequent critic of Obama.
"I wouldn't use the A-word to describe this. ... That's a word that gets used a lot," said Sen. John Cornyn. The Texas lawmaker is in charge of the party's efforts to win control of the Senate this fall and has seen internal divisions develop since Obama's announcement between his party's establishment and lawmakers and candidates more aligned with the tea party.
These days, at least, amnesty is most often used by Republicans wanting to accuse Democrats of being soft on illegal immigration, much of which involves Hispanics who make their way across the border from Mexico.
In his announcement, Obama said the government will no longer seek to deport illegal immigrants under the age of 30 who were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and have been in the country for at least five continuous years. They also must have no criminal history and either have graduated from a U.S. high school, have earned a GED diploma or certificate or have served in the military.
"Let's be clear, this is not amnesty, this is not immunity, this is not a path to citizenship, this is not a permanent fix," Obama said from the White House Rose Garden. "This is the right thing to do." Administration officials said about 800,000 individuals could be affected.
While the White House and Democrats in Congress say the president's action was modeled on the DREAM Act, that measure includes a path to citizenship, a critical political distinction.
Romney, who has vowed to veto the DREAM Act, has recently softened his rhetoric on immigration as he works to cut into Obama's support among Hispanic voters. So far, he has not said whether he supports or opposes what the president did.
McConnell and others said they want to hear what the former Massachusetts governor is going to say on the subject in a speech later this week. Romney is "the leader of our party" at least until the November election and perhaps well afterwards, McConnell said.
While they sidestepped the question of amnesty, McConnell and several other Republicans sent Obama a letter seeking an explanation of his authority to bypass Congress on the policy switch. The request, announced by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, also asked precisely how the new policy would work, and whether federal funds will be used to implement it.
Whatever Romney says, Republicans aligned with the tea party are more outspoken than the party's establishment on the issue.
"This is amnesty," Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, a favorite of tea party Republicans, said last week in a quick reaction to Obama's announcement.
"Congressman (Jeff) Flake and President Obama, advocates for amnesty," Wil Cardon alleged in one emailed statement, issued as part of his uphill battle for the GOP nomination to the Senate in Arizona.
Andrew Wilder, a campaign spokesman for Flake, said the congressman "does not support giving amnesty to illegal immigrants, and he never has."
Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, one of the party's more outspoken lawmakers in the immigration issue, has announced he intends to file suit challenging Obama's authority to bypass Congress and change the policy on his own.
Also in the House, Rep. Ben Quayle, R-Ariz., has introduced legislation to block Obama from implementing his own policy. In some regards, his state serves as a microcosm of the broader debate inside the party.
In addition to Kyl's comments, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told reporters during the day he neither wanted to "repeal it or not repeal" what Obama announced.
Like many other Republicans, McCain said Obama was now doing "something that he said he didn't have constitutional authority to do a year ago." Also like other members of his party, he said the president's announcement had complicated efforts to work out a comprehensive solution to a vexing problem.
House Speaker John Boehner told reporters that because the economy is so weak, Obama has "turned to the politics of envy and division, which I don't think the American people are going to accept."
Boehner said Obama's announcement "puts everyone in a difficult position," including young illegal immigrants who "from no fault of their own" are in the United States, as well as lawmakers seeking legislation to tackle more than just the problem of younger illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children.
Democrats have applauded Obama's announcement, many of them adding that he acted after Republicans refused to permit a more wide-ranging immigration measure advance in Congress.
